The first album produced by the Bassplate Records, from Italy, is a collaboration with the talented emerging German/Indonesian artist, Tóke.
Once again is the motherland of reggae, that nurtures creativity and
encounters: Mikey Tuff (label co-founder and riddim builder) and Tóke met in Kingston during a long and very productive stay on the island, that brought inspiration and creativity.
Thanks to the affinity between the vibes and riddims from the label and the artist sensitivity, the idea of producing an album out of this experience, came naturally.
“Wake Up Inna Kingston” was recorded in Bologna at Studio61 by Adriano Ippolito (label co-founder and sound engineer): there Tóke recorded the vocals and enriched Bassplate riddims with precious instrumentals overdubs. The album features Jamaican artists like Conkarah, Infinite, Exile the Brave and the Indonesian Ras Muhamad, the reggae ambassador of southeast Asia.
The sound of the album is the one that mark out Bassplate Records productions: the riddims are heavily inspired by jamaican music from the seventies and eighties and are built with the combined use of real instruments, vintage outboards and plugins, always looking for the warm analog sound from the past.
Tóke showcases his writing skills in different topics that range from a storytelling about the music daily living in Kingston in Frizzle, album’s manifesto, to the deep farewell ballad Movements, touching intimate self thoughs in No One, Running Away or Talkin’ Bout You, and social commentaries in Open the World and Respect.
The artwork has been curated by Simonluca Spadanuda (Urbanmagic) and is composed by nine different original illustrations representing the album and songs’ philosophy. Each drawings was realized using a mixture of traditional and digital techniques.
The eight tracks that compose the album, enlighten Tóke fresh touch and the high quality of Bassplate productions: the entire work has indeed an international reggae flavour but does not cease to connect to the land that gave birth to this music.
“Wake Up Inna Kingston” tour will kick off in May, 12 in Hamburg with several dates already confirmed.
